CHARLESTON - Finding books on subjects of West Virginia and Appalachia might usually require a trip online and freight fees.
Now, The Appalachian Book Company, formerly Frog Creek Books, in Charleston, has a huge selection of West Virginia and Appalachian subject matter in books, CDs, and DVDs. Books about coal mine wars and Appalachian cookery are top sellers and fly off the shelves, according to company owner Mike Sublette, of Elkview.
Other topics include local and state history, literature, poetry, essays, coal mining history, Native American studies, biographies, African American studies, Civil War, railroads, religion, folklore, environmental studies, nature, ethnic studies, recreation and travel, sports, theatre, traditional living, crafts, and photography.
Sublette opened his book store in 2003.
"It's what I love to do more than anything else," Sublette said. "I have always accumulated books. When I was 5, I remember lining up my brother's textbooks on a shelf and looking through all of them. Now I can do it and make a living out of it."
In addition to subjects of West Virginia and Appalachia, Sublette has a small section of publisher's overstock books that are discounted.
"I carry things you don't find anywhere else in the area, and I'm starting to get a reputation for it," Sublette said.
The Appalachian Book Company is located in the Capitol Market at 800 Smith Street, in Charleston. For information, call 304-346-5222 or 1-800-395-7974, or log onto appalachianbookco.com.

Thanks for this story on Mike Sublette. As the official WV expert on films, I must tell a person a day they can find some WV movie, like "Matewan" at Frog Creek Books along with many others - the only place in the WORLD other than the filmmaker themselves. Mike should be supported in every way for being this unique source.
