STAFF REPORT
Putnam County native Gabriel Redding will be biking across America this summer to benefit the Multiple Sclerosis Society.
The trip is expected to take Redding 43 days. Redding began his journey on June 29 in Virginia Beach, Va., and is expected to complete the trek on Aug. 10 in Seattle, Wash.
The 3,204 mile trip will pass through 13 different states, including his home state of West Virginia.
Working primarily with the All America Chapter, Gabriel and staff have worked with local MS supporters in all 13 states.
"We are honored to have Gabriel Redding riding across the US for us. The awareness and momentum he is gaining for the National MS Society from this ride will impact the 400,000 people living with MS in the United States. We wish him the best of luck during his adventure as he crosses through our 50-state network of NMSS chapters," said Kami Baker, Development Coordinator to the Charleston based - All America Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
While Redding is originally from Putnam County, today he makes his home in Nashville and his living as a musician.
He is the front man for the pop/rock band GABRIEL and drummer for the modern rock band "Redding Brothers."
Widely known on the college and military circuit, Redding has a live show that leaves audiences in amazement. It consists of catchy melodies, acrobatic stunts, elevators, drum solos while hanging from a wall, 20 feet tall towers, and his self-taught ability to play over 20 instruments, sometimes two or three at a time, with everything in surround sound.
He has performed in 20 states, 9 countries, on 3 continents, and has shared the stage with Jason Mraz, Edwin McCain, Bo Bice, Gin Blossoms, Sister Hazel, Joan Jett, and KC and the Sunshine Band.
When asked why he is doing this ride, Redding said, "Aside from the shear thrill of the adventure, and the risk of the unknown, just to be able to do something like this when you know that there are 400,000 Americans who suffer from a debilitating disease that can prevent them from even walking. This one's for them."
Gov. Joe Manchin and other local officials will join supporters for a reception for Redding as he comes through the Charleston area on Friday, July 3. The reception will be held in Riggleman Hall on the campus of the University of Charleston. This will begin at 6 p.m. All are welcome to attend.
