VENA BURXKIN
WOODS BARRETT
Vena Burxkin Woods Barrett, 81, of Hurricane went to be with the Lord Sunday, May 23, 2010, at Thomas Memorial Hospital, South Charleston.
She was born, February 19, 1929, in Putnam County and was a daughter of the late George Woods and Lula Woods Chandler. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Charles Chandler; brother, James Woods; and sister-in-law, Iris Woods.
She was a homemaker and a longtime member of Glad Tidings Assembly of God, Hurricane.
She is survived by three daughters, Vickie Barrett and Peggy (Charles) Sneed of Hurricane and Anita (Brian) Kuhn of Midland, Mich.; six grandchildren, Justin and Amber Sneed and Aaron, Jordan, Evan and Morgan Kuhn; two brothers, Roy (Ruby) Woods of Hilltop Lake, Texas, and Dorsie Woods of Jacksonville, Ark.; plus several nephews and one niece.
Funeral services were conducted Thursday, May 27, at Glad Tidings Assembly, Hurricane, by Pastor Rebekah Jerrell. Burial followed in Valley View Memorial Park, Hurricane.
Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, was in charge of arrangements.
DANA H. CARNEY SR.
Mr. Dana H. Carney Sr., 84, of Red House passed away May 17, 2010, in CAMC Teays Valley Hospital.
Mr. Carney was retired from West Virginia Rehabilitation Center, a graduate of Morris Harvey College and a Navy veteran of WWII.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita June Carney.
Mr. Carney is survived by his children, Dana Carney Jr. of California and Debbie Smith of Virginia; sisters, Rose Duff and Ann Langue, both of Florida; four grandchildren, Dana Carney III, Kimberly Franks, Brandon Workman and Kelli Workman; and seven great-grandchildren.
A tribute to the life of Mr. Dana H. Carney Sr. was held Friday, May 21, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor David Panaro officiating. Burial followed in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens and Crematorium, Red House.

SHIRLEY PAULINE DAVIS
Shirley Pauline Davis passed away at CAMC hospital on Sunday, May 23, 2010, of a cerebral hemorrhage at the age of 61.
Shirley leaves behind her husband of 45 years, Arnold Davis; four children, Jeffery Clark, Ray Davis, Pam Brown and Terri Bryan; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held Thursday, May 27, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane. Burial followed in Valley View Memorial Park.
Shirley was a celebrated wife and mother and will be dearly missed.
HERBERT T. DOWNS
Herbert T. Downs, 84, of Hurricane died May 25, 2010.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel Downs of Hurricane; nieces, Sandy and Cathy; and nephew, Robert Kent, and their spouses.
Services were held Thursday, May 27, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with Dr. Jeffrey A. Johnson officiating. Entombment followed in Forest Memorial Park, Milton.

FRAMPTON
Myrtle Fletcher Frampton, 86, of Hurricane passed away Thursday, May 20, 2010, at her home.
Born April 9, 1924, in Putnam County, she was a daughter of the late Lon and Edith Fletcher Racer. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Burton, Buford, Ward and Tommy; and sisters, Gaynell Woods, Norma Erwin and Alta Racer.
Myrtle loved to make quilts in her younger days and to work crossword puzzles.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, Norman Frampton Sr.; daughter and son-in-law, Frances and Delmer Morris of Elkhart, Ind.; sons and daughters-in-law, Phillip and Joyce Frampton and Douglas and Cindy Frampton, all of Elkhart, Ind., Norman Jr. and BJ Frampton of Melbourne, Fla., and Robert and Becky Frampton of Hurricane; brother, Roger Racer of Hurricane; 11 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 22, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans. Entombment followed in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

MARK EDWARD KEES
Mark Edward Kees, 58, of Hurricane, passed away May 19, 2010, at St. Marys Medical Center. Memorial services were conducted Friday, May 28, 2010 at Wallace Funeral Home & Chapel, Barboursville. He was born June 19, 1951, in Huntington, WV, a son of the late John Phillip Kees and Maxine Frances Boyer Kees.
He was a member of Our Lady of Fatima Catholic Church and was a veteran of the United States Army.
In addition to his parents he is preceded in death by one brother, David Kees and one sister, Monica Jacobson.
He is survived by one daughter, Carla Kees; one brother, Joseph Kees; one grandson, Hayden Edward Lambert; uncle, Erwin Boyer; nephew, Matthew Jacobson.

GERALD Q. "JERRY" LEMON
Gerald Q. "Jerry" Lemon, 64, of Sissonville, formerly of Nitro, passed away Friday, May 21, 2010, at Cabell Huntington Hospital after a short illness.
Jerry was born on October 24, 1945.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Doris A. Lemon; brother, Jackie L. Lemon; paternal grandparents, O.Q. and Ella Lemon of Little Hocking, Ohio; and maternal grandparents, George R. and Macel D. Cook Sr. of Nitro.
Jerry was a 1965 graduate of Nitro High School, a Marine Corps Vietnam veteran, and a former employee of the United States Post Office in Charleston. He was a member of the VFW.
Surviving are sister, Cornell Y. "Judy" Lemon; brother, Mickey H. Lemon, both of Nitro; sister-in-law, Karen L. Lemon of St. Albans (Jack's wife); nieces, Erin N. Busby and husband Greg, and Kara L. Shreves and husband Gavin, both of St. Albans. One great-niece; two great-nephews; several aunts; uncles; and cousins also survive him.
The family would like to express their utmost appreciation to the ICU attending physicians and nursing staff at Cabell Huntington Hospital and the VA Medical Center, both in Huntington, for their diligent care and attention they provided to Jerry during his final days.
Services were held Wednesday, May 26, 2010, at Cooke Funeral Home Chapel, Nitro, with the Rev. Harold B. White Jr. officiating Burial followed in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with military rites.

THELMA JO MILAM
Thelma Jo Milam of Culloden died Sunday, May 23, 2010, at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital after a long illness.
She was born September 2, 1932 in Louisa, Virginia, and was a daughter of Harry Earl and Florence Elizabeth Hager Harper. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving son, Jerry Milam; three brothers and four sisters.
Thelma was a member of Evergreen Hills Church, Milton.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clint Milam; four children and their spouses, Joe and Melissa Milam of St. Albans, Don and Candy Milam of Silver City, New Mexico, Dennis and Lina Milam of Apple Grove and Connie and Butch Casdorph of Culloden; 17 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 28, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with the Rev. Ezra Graley officiating. Burial followed in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

IRIS MARCELLA NEAL
Iris Marcella Neal, 88, of St. Albans, formerly of Lake Panasoffkee, Fla., passed away Friday, May 21, 2010, at SunBridge Care and Rehabilitation Center, Dunbar, after a short illness.
She was born in Yawkey, Lincoln County, on September 25, 1921, and was a daughter of Arch and Columbia Pearl LeMasters McClure. In addition to her parents, Marcella was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Darlington Esmond Neal; sister, Deloris Woodrum; and brother, Arch McClure Jr.
She was a homemaker and was a saleslady for Sarah Coventry and Celebrity Jewelry companies and was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church, St. Albans.
She is survived by her two children and their spouses, Ben and Joyce Neal Dillon of Charleston and Ric and Lynn Neal of Hurricane; sisters, Ann Miller and husband, Calvin, of St. Albans and Edna Miller of Joliet, Illinois; brother, James McClure and wife, Sue, of Yawkey; four grandchildren, Matthew Dillon of Parkersburg, Charles Dillon of Columbus, Ohio, William Dillon of Kansas and Christopher Neal of Fairmont; three great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Marcella's life was held Monday, May 24, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor Tim Campbell officiating. Burial followed in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans.

(DONIFF) QUENTRILL
Iola Faye (Doniff) Quentrill, 62, passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010, after a short illness.
She was born March 8, 1948. Being a native of Putnam County, she was an avid outdoorswoman who loved to hunt and fish.
Her father was the late Lester Doniff of Hamlin.
She is survived by her husband, Michael B. Quentrill of Culloden; mother, Janice I. Clark of Hurricane; son, James N. Scott Jr. and wife, Sallie, of Elizabethton, Tenn.; daughter, Theresa L. (Scott) Callaway and husband, Ray, of Hurricane; sister, Doris J. Maynard of Hurricane; brothers, Tony Doniff of Hamlin, Roger Doniff of Culloden, and Allen Doniff of Milton; also, Calvin Smith of Hurricane and Terry Chapman of Culloden; half brothers, Ronald and Lester Gale; half sisters, Dorothy, Geneice, Shella, and Diana; grandchildren, Matthew Scott, Norman Scott III, Phillip Oxley and Samantha Callaway; great-grandchild, Tristan Scott; and stepchildren, Michael and Crystal Quentrill. She also had five stepgrandchildren.
Services were held Tuesday, May 25, at Heck Funeral Home, Milton. Burial followed in Burns Peaceful Valley Cemetery, Culloden.
KIT DOUGLAS ROBERTS
Kit Douglas Roberts, 53, passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, after suffering a ruptured aorta.
Kit was born on April 17, 1957, and was a son of the late Garnett and Kenneth "K.C." Roberts.
He grew up in Tornado with his brother, Tim Roberts, and his sister, Amy Roberts Lowery.
Kit lived in St. Albans most of his life and, for the last several years, resided in Gallipolis, Ohio, where he was employed as the manager of Dollar General Store.
Kit was a loving father to four children, Kit Jr., and his wife, Rachel, Nick, Rae, and Beth. Kit always enjoyed having fun with his kids.
Their favorite memories will always include his family cookouts and trips to the beach with their dad.
Kit graduated from St. Albans High School in 1975, attended Marshall University and was a loyal Thundering Herd fan.
He also enjoyed watching NASCAR races with his boys.
In addition to his children and siblings, many others are left to mourn his loss, including his former wife, Jane Roberts; his fiancée, Billie Holland; her children, Josh and Chrissy; his nephews and nieces, David, Blake, Alicia and Casey Roberts; and numerous friends and co-workers.
A memorial service to honor Kit's life was held Sunday, May 23, at Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor David Stauffer officiating.
Because of Kit's love for animals, the family requests donations to the Marion County Humane Society, P.O. Box 905, Fairmont, WV, 26554.

SAUL ROBERTS
Mary Vernell Saul Roberts, 86, of Hurricane passed away on Monday, May 24, 2010, after a long illness.
She was a member of Highlawn Church of God, St. Albans.
She was born in Alkol, Lincoln County, and was preceded in death by her parents, C.W. and Harriett Saul; infant daughter, Sytha Teresa Smith; and husband, Orban R. Roberts.
She is survived by a son, Ernest R. Smith Jr. and his wife, Joan, of St. Albans; brother, Gurley Saul; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren; stepchildren, Glenna Mayes, Okie Roberts and Gary Roberts; stepgrandchildren and stepgreat-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 26, at Curry Funeral Home Chapel, Alum Creek. Burial followed in Orchard Hills Memory Gardens, Yawkey.
The family requests donations in honor of Mary are made to the Alzheimer's Foundation or Highlawn Church of God.

CLARENCE D. SETLIFF
Clarence D. Setliff, 83, of Culloden, W.Va., passed away Tuesday, May 25, 2010, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington, W.Va., after a long illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Amber A. and Judy Carpenter Setliff, and one son, Clarence Setliff Jr. and his wife, Debbie.
He is survived by his wife, Betty Sowards Setliff at home; sons, Bradley and his wife, Sue, of Culloden, John and his wife, Peggy, Setliff of Red House, W.Va., and daughter, Sherry Bayless and husband, Robert of Hurricane, W.Va.; brother, Billie Setliff of Lavalette, W.Va.; grandchildren, Patrick, James and John Setliff; granddaughters, Maria Setliff and Casey Bond; and one great-granddaughter Juliet Rae Bond.

JOSEPH THOMAS SHANK
Joseph Thomas Shank of Poca died May 21, 2010, at the age of 88 after a valiant battle against lung disease.
Born on August 1, 1921, in Charleston to William Lloyd Stanley Shank and Lucy Jane Garton, Joe is predeceased by parents; four brothers, William "Bill" Lowell, Victor, and Lucian Shank; and his beloved wife, Lenah Mae Shank.
He is survived by son, Thomas A. Shank; daughter, Marilyn Sue Shank; granddaughter, Jennifer Dawn Wilkes; grandson, Matthew Thomas Shank; and two great-grandchildren.
Joe graduated from Charleston High School and Morris Harvey College with degrees in chemistry and math.
He held a variety of jobs-newspaper carrier, theater usher, machinist, and power substation grunt-before becoming a project scientist at Union Carbide. Joe retired from Carbide in 1982.
During WWII, Joe served in the Army Air Corp's Sixth Emergency Rescue Squadron in the Pacific and was awarded seven bronze stars on five theater ribbons.
An American hero, Joe served his country, community, family and friends with valor and honor. He will be remembered for his generosity, compassion, wit, strength, determination, intelligence, patience and innovation.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, May 25, at Tyler Mountain Funeral Home.

MARY FRANCES SOWARDS
Mary Frances Sowards, 85, passed away Wednesday, May 19, 2010, at the Putnam Care and Rehab Center in Hurricane after a 12-year struggle with Alzheimer's disease.
Mary Frances was born November 30, 1924, was a daughter of the late Guy P. and Margaret Kinser and was preceded in death by her husband, Woodrow W. Sowards.
She was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. Mary Frances was retired from the West Virginia Division of Vocational Rehabilitation Services.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Carole and Barry Morlachetta of Culloden; her grandson, Matt Morlachetta and his sons, Tyler, Austin and Nicholas, and their mother, Misty Morlachetta; and her grandson and wife, Jay and Jenny Morlachetta and their daughter, Mia Grace. She is also survived by her son, Thomas D. Sowards of Barboursville; her grandson, David Sowards, and his mother, Donna Gregory. In addition to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, she is survived by her sister, Jeane English of Charleston and her children, Glenn, Rod and Karen; and her brother, Guy P. Kinser Jr., and his son Nathan, both of Columbus, Ohio.
The family will always be grateful to the staff at the Putnam Care and Rehab Center for the loving care and compassion shown to Mary Frances for more than five years. They deeply appreciate the compassionate end-of-life care extended by HospiceCare, Charleston.
A celebration of her life was held Thursday, May 27, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane. A private entombment will be at a later time in Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans, with the Rev. Dr. Dan Hogan officiating.

REV. HENRY CLIFFORD "BILL" STANLEY
The Rev. Henry Clifford "Bill" Stanley, 86, of Winfield went home to be with the Lord on Monday, May 17, 2010, at his residence.
Bill was born April 2, 1924, in Cabin Creek and was a son of the late Doard and Belle Hodge Stanley.
Bill loved the Lord and, for 53 years, he served the Lord as a minister and, for 28 of those years, he served as the pastor of God's Tabernacle in Spring Hill. He was a former miner for Carbon Fuel and was a member of the UMWA.
He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Esther Grounds Stanley.
Bill is survived by his wife, Charlotte Stevens Stanley; daughter, Robin (James) Martin of Quarrier; sons, Mitchell Stanley of Chelyan, Jerry (Linda) Stanley of Alum Creek, Randy (Sue) Stanley of Cross Lanes and Michael (Tammy) Stanley of Quarrier; stepsons, Kevin (Kelley) Stevens of Liberty, Alan Stevens of Charleston and James Stevens of Buffalo; 11 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren.
The funeral service was held Saturday, May 22, at Stevens & Grass Funeral Home, Malden, with Randy Stanley and the Rev. Bill Ellis officiating. The burial followed the service in Site Hill Cemetery, Leewood.

"DADDY LES" TUCKER
Leslie Walter "Daddy Les" Tucker, 85, of Buffalo passed away peacefully at his home, Sunday, May 23, 2010, with family and friends by his side, following a long illness.
He was a Christian and a faithful member of Otter Branch Church, with many of years of perfect attendance prior to his illness.
He was a veteran of the United States Army, serving in Italy in World War II.
He retired from AVTEX Fibers as a chemical operator with 33 years of service.
He was an avid deer hunter and loved his family dearly.
Born January 13, 1925, he was the son of the late Ira and Iva Lett Tucker. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Mona Gertrude Stover Tucker; his wife of seven years, Doris Mae Elliott; a son, Bill Davis; and sisters, Effie Tucker, Edith Tucker, Francis Clark, Irene Deweese and Nathalie Harris.
Survivors include his sons, Gary (Arlene) Tucker of Buffalo, Johnny (Sonna) Tucker of Buffalo, Mike (Kathy) Tucker of Buffalo and Leslie Tucker II of Dallas, Texas; a daughter, Polly (Deryl) Parker of Grapevine, Texas; stepdaughters, Becky Priddy of Buffalo and Glenda Caudill of Poca; sister, Leona (Ed) Harris of Buffalo; a special friend, Gloria Workman; 15 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.
