ANTHONY RICHARD "FLASH" ALLOWATT

Anthony Richard "Flash" Allowatt, 93, of Scott Depot passed away June 21, 2010, at Hubbard House, Charleston.

He was born in Holden on June 19, 1917, of Italian immigrant parents, Francesco and Teresa Allevato (Allowatt) and spent his childhood and adolescent years in Harrison County. Anthony was given his nickname, "Flash", due to his athletic prowess, particularly on the high school gridiron with the Shinnston Spartans, and is known by it to this day.

During a stint in the Army, he married his beloved wife, Veronica Angelucci. He worked in Marion County coal mines for several years while pursuing an education in accounting, allowing him to take his family and move to Charleston to establish a successful accounting business for which he was self-employed for over 50 years. He also formed Flash Title and License Service allowing many West Virginians to license their motor vehicles without unnecessary travel to the state capitol.

His passions were WVU Mountaineer football, Detroit Tiger baseball, his faith in God, singing, telling stories and jokes and playing cards with his family and friends. Flash was very proud of his Italian heritage and culture and passed on that pride to his children and grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Francesco Allevato and Teresa Guido; brothers, John Allowatt and Joe Allowatt; and sisters Rosanne Fragman, Katherine Cherubino, Faye Loretta and Rosalie Aquino.

He is also survived by sister, Mary Cherubino of Fredericksburg, Va.; and many nephews and nieces.

Flash will always be remembered as a loving and giving son, brother, husband, father, grandfather and friend.

Mass of Christian Burial was held Friday, June 25, at the Catholic Church of the Ascension, Hurricane, with Father Neil Buchlein as celebrant. Entombment with military honors followed in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.
