Lou Ella "Toots" Burnside, 86, of Teays Valley died at home on June 19, 2010, after a seven-year struggle following a stroke.

She was born November 11, 1923, to Bernard and Grace Harless.

Lou was a graduate of Stonewall Jackson High School, Morris Harvey College, and West Virginia College of Graduate Studies.

During World War II, she worked for C & P as a telephone operator. Following a long line of family members who were educators, Lou shared her love of learning with the children of Chelyan Elementary and Cabin Creek Mission Elementary, where she taught grades 1 through 4. She retired from Kanawha County after 25 years of teaching.

She was a member of Reynolds Memorial Methodist Church in Marmet.

Lou is survived by her husband of 65 years, John Lyle Burnside; daughters and sons-in-law, Jane and Eddie Harless of Scott Depot, Jonelle and Rick Sadilek of Champaign, Ill.; and grandsons, John and Matthew Sadilek of Champaign, Ill. She is also survived by her brothers, Dr. James Harless (Harriet) and Bernard "Chub" (Lois) Harless.

The family held a private burial. A service to honor Lou's memory was held Thursday, July 1, 2010, at Harding Funeral Home (Kanawha City).

LOLA JUNE ESTEP

Mrs. Lola June Estep, 84, born July 30, 1925, died June 26, 2010, in the Hubbard Hospice House.

She has been a resident of Poca since 1963, prior to Poca she was a resident of Chelyan for approximately 19 years.

June grew up on Cabin Creek, where she met her childhood sweetheart, James Farley Estep of Ohley, who later became her husband.

They remained together all these years enjoying many things together, including walking, traveling, fishing and hunting.

June was preceded in death by her only son, Bill Estep, who was an outstanding math teacher and basketball coach at Spring Hill and McKinley; her granddaughter, Leigh Ann Ball of Hurricane; 12 siblings; and her parents, Mildred and Jeff Ward.

Surviving are her loving husband of 65 years, James; daughter and friend, Nora Estep of Scott Depot; brother, David Ward of Florida; daughter-in-law, Shirley Estep of Poca; granddaughter, Kelli Jones and fiancé Randy Jacobs of Nitro; great-granddaughters, Sara Jones of Nitro and Michaela Ball of Hurricane; great-grandson, Nicholas Ball of Hurricane; and grandson-in-law, Tim Ball of Hurricane.

This well respected lady was a very godly woman in every aspect of her life, being an inspiration for many.

She was a Sunday school teacher for many years. She loved her family, people in general, and to laugh; her saying was "laughter does the soul good."

Before reaching the age to be eligible to participate as a senior citizen, she was invited to join the Poca group. She did; she loved them, and they loved her as she sang and read to them on a regular basis.

June was extremely gifted in writing songs and poetry, and was a member of the Charleston Poetry Society for years.

Her writings are great in number, one being "God Bless West Virginia", which along with several others, were copy righted, including a poem, "Our State Byrd", which she wrote for Senator Byrd.

She received a personal thank you from the Senator. She even has a poem in the archives at the Charleston Cultural Center. She sang frequently at church; in her younger years she was invited to sing at weddings and other functions

June was known as "the hat lady", wearing a variety of hats. Friends would often give her hats, saying that certain hats looked like her. It wouldn't be surprising if all the angels wore hats upon June's arrival as a tribute and to welcome her.

June was so loved and respected by many people of all different ages, and will be remembered and missed by all who knew her.

God gave us memories so we can have roses in December. Nature and walking were two loves of June's, so we will simply say "June is not gone; she is just walking". Someday we will walk with her again.

A tribute to the life of Mrs. Lola June Estep was held Monday, June 28, 2010, at Rock Branch Independent Church with Pastor Delbert L. Hawley and Chad R. Harding officiating. Entombment followed in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.
