IVA DEAN BARNETT

Death leaves a heartache that no one can heal.

Love leaves a memory that no one can steal.

Iva Dean Barnett, the second of nine siblings born to the late Arnold and Violet (Washington) Grant, entered into her glorified body the 28th day of June 2010 with her loving family by her side, after a long and courageous battle of multiple illnesses.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Donald Barnett; two sons, Jerry Austin Barnett and David Elijah Barnett; an infant daughter, Rose Sharon Barnett; and five brothers, Dale, Don, Darrell, Dawson and Denzil Grant.

She leaves behind to grieve her passing: her children, son, Ronald Lee (Linda) Barnett of Milton; and daughters, Mary Newsome, Brenda Cogar and Peggy (Harold) Jarvis of Winfield, Carolyn (Kevin) Gillispie of Fraziers Bottom, Joyce (Jennings) Sturgell of Kermit, Brenda Barnett of Cowan and Lori (Greg) Akers of Winfield. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren; three sisters, Kathaleen Erwin, Sue (Gary) Carroll of Hurricane and Bonnie (Gerald) Beaver of Culloden; brother, Denver Grant of Hurricane; one aunt, Valeria (Washington) Johnston of Huntington; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

The funeral service was held Friday, July 2, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Doug Bragg officiating. Burial followed in Grant Cemetery, Winfield.

BERTA STARCHER BECKETT

Berta Starcher Beckett, 99, of Hurricane died Saturday, July 3, 2010.

Mrs. Beckett was a daughter of the late Leonard and Flora Hackney Starcher of Beech, Calhoun County, and was the last surviving member of that family of 11 children.

Berta was a member and regularly attended Mount Olive Missionary Baptist Church for many years. Her life was spent mainly as a hard-working farmer and housewife.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Russell Beckett, who died in 2002.

Berta is survived by one daughter, Barbara Johnson of St. Marys; five sons, Melvin of Danville, Blaine of Hernando, Fla., Landis of Montgomery, Texas, Glenn of Hurricane and David of Ravenswood; 13 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Thursday, July 8, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Paul Drake officiating. Burial followed in Mount Olive Cemetery, Hurricane.

JERRY V. CUNNINGHAM

Mr. Jerry V. Cunningham, 66, of Scott Depot passed away June 29, 2010, at home.

Mr. Cunningham was born in Dunbar. He was retired from Boil Makers Union Local 667 and was the retired owner of Ben's RV Center in Hurricane. Jerry was a member of Nitro Moose Lodge 565 and the Beni Kedem Temple in Charleston.

He was preceded in death by his parents, W.G. and Inez Cunningham; and brothers Kermit, George and Garland Cunningham.

He is survived by his children, Ben and Melinda Cunningham of Scott Depot, Dawn Morgan of Pliny and Rhonda Cunningham of Scott Depot; sister, Audrey McClanahan of Cross Lanes; brother, Harold Cunningham of Hurricane; four grandchildren, Jessica, Parker and Ashlee Cunningham and Josh Morgan; and one great-grandson, Hunter Jacobs.

The family would like to say a special thank you to Evelyn Edward for the care given to Jerry.

A tribute to the life of Mr. Jerry V. Cunningham was held Friday, July 2, at Gatens-Harding Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in Grandview Memorial Park, Dunbar.

BEULAH F. BYRNSIDE ESCUE

Beulah F. Byrnside Escue, 74, of Winfield passed away July 1, 2010. She was born December 3, 1935, to Jehu George and Dana Rogers Byrnside.

She grew up in St. Albans and graduated from St. Albans High School, class of '54. She retired from Thomas Memorial Hospital with 28 years of service.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, James Escue; brothers, James, Eddie, Cecil, Fred, J.V. and L.C. Byrnside; and sisters, Jeanne Kaplan and Ordra Honaker.

She is survived by her five children and their families, David, Nancy and Sarah Escue of Dumfries, Va.; Mike, Patty and Brian Escue of Hurricane; Doug, Cassie, DJ, Zach and Cara Escue of Culloden; Tim, LaDonna, Makayla and Noah Escue of Hurricane, and Susan, Eddie, Kate and Evan Bostic of Scott Depot.

Beulah was her given name, but after she became a grandmother she was forever known to all as Boo Boo. She was at the height of her glory when surrounded by her family, especially her grandkids. She was a member of Adda Baptist Church where her son Mike is pastor and attended Abney St. Church of God, Teays Valley Church of God and Trinity Church of God.

A memorial service to celebrate her life was held Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Teays Valley Church of God with Pastor Ken Toler of Trinity Church of God officiating.

EDWARD ARTHUR GADD JR.

Edward Arthur Gadd Jr., 51, of St. Albans passed away July 2, 2010, at Hubbard Hospice House, Charleston.

Junior was a laborer with Peerless Block and Brick with 30 years' service.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He is survived by his loving wife of 32 years, Patricia Pauley Gadd; children, Terry Pauley of St. Albans and Erica Lanham and her husband Thomas Lanham Jr. of Gallipolis Ferry; grandson, William Edward Lanham; father, Edward Arthur Gadd Sr. of St. Albans; mother, Margie Byrd Gadd of St. Albans; and sister, Elizabeth Smith of St. Albans.

A graveside service was held Tuesday, July 6, at Cunningham Memorial Park, St. Albans. Burial followed in the memorial park.

Bartlett-Chapman Funeral Home, St. Albans, was in charge of arrangements.

JOHN PATRICK GATENS

Mr. John Patrick Gatens, 81, of Eleanor went home to be with the Lord July 5, 2010, at home.

Mr. Gatens was retired from Monsanto and the Bricklayers Local 9. He was a lifelong member of St. Patrick Catholic Church, an Army veteran and an avid sports fan.

He is preceded in death by his parents, William and Elizabeth Gatens; grandson, Adam Parsons; and great-grandson, Jack Hughes.

He is survived by his high school sweetheart of 60 years, Mrs. Emma Gatens; children, Mike and wife, Kim Gatens, of Buffalo, Shirley and husband, Pete Absten, of Liberty, Thomas Gatens of Buffalo, Linda and husband, Randy Parsons, of Red House, Bernard and wife, Rose Gatens, of Fraziers Bottom, Maria C. Hughes of Taylor, Mich., Paul and wife, Robin Gatens, of Buffalo, Angela and husband, Ed Bell, of St. Albans and Roy Smith of Milton; brothers, Jim Gatens of Eleanor and Ed Gatens of Fort Myers of Fla.; sisters, Helen Melton of Poca, Rose White of Point Pleasant and Francis Kelly of Parkersburg; sister-in-law, Charlotte Smith of Eleanor; 19 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral Mass was held Friday, July 9, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Bancroft. Burial followed in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.

THOMAS E. GREGORY

Thomas E. Gregory, 56, of St. Albans went home to be with the Lord on Friday, June 25, 2010, after a long illness.

Thomas was born January 28, 1954, in South Charleston to John F. Gregory Sr. and Cledis B. Gregory, who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his grandparents, Bud Ephriam and Martha Oliver Gregory and James Thomas "J.T." and Nellie Belle Mitchell; and his brother, John Gregory Jr.

He leaves to cherish his memory: brothers, Joseph, Jackie and Mark; nephews, Eric Knapper and Jason, Chris and Kevin Gregory; nieces, Kelly Jones and Sarah and Joanna Gregory; great-nephews, great-nieces, stepnephews and a stepniece.

Services were held Saturday, July 3, at Preston Funeral Home, Charleston, with the Rev. Robert Davis officiating.

DANIEL E. "DANNY" HARRAH

Daniel E. "Danny" Harrah, 61, of Hurricane passed away Friday, July 2, 2010, after a courageous battle with lung cancer.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Lemon and Virgie Harrah.

He had been employed by Elk Grocery Company, Sysco Foodservice Inc. and Phillips Supply Company of Charleston.

Surviving are his wife of 33 years, Dianne LaMont Harrah; sons, Anthony (MaryBeth) Harrah of Nitro, and Justin (Kristina) Harrah of Hurricane; grandson, Julian Harrah of Nitro; brothers, Dr. J.D. Harrah of Hurricane, and Charles Harrah of Scott Depot; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, July 6, 2010, at Teays Valley Presbyterian Church, Scott Depot, WV 25560, with the Rev. Janet and the Rev. Doug Jenkins officiating. Entombment followed the service at Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes.

"Hindu" HENDERSON

James Conley "Hindu" Henderson, 52, of Hurricane, W.Va., passed away Thursday, June 17, 2010, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, W.Va.

A memorial service was conducted Thursday, July 8, 2010, at Chapman Funeral Home, Hurricane with Dr. Thom Chapman officiating.

He was born January 29, 1958 in Beckley, W.Va., a son of the late James Clearence Henderson and Peggie Ann Henderson. He was also preceded in death by his great-grandparents, Ella Conley and J.W. Ringstaff; grandparents Margie and G.C. Hurt and Myrtle and Clearence Henderson and great-uncle John Fotos.

He is survived by his wife, Cathy Henderson; daughter Jessica Henderson of Hurricane; son Logan Henderson of Sumerco, W.Va.; step-daughter and step-son-in-law Jessica Eggleston Shields and Jeffery Shields and their daughter Grace Catherine Shields, all of Shady Springs, W.Va., Billy Eggleston of St. Albans, W.Va.; aunt Marita Kay and Ronald W. Riggan of Virginia Beach, Va.; great-aunt Hazel Fotos of Beckley, W.Va.

James had many friends, who were very close to him and they are Charity Johnson, Joe Sowers, Dale and Toni Lynn Cremeans and many others.

ANNA MARIE LOVEJOY HUNT

Anna Marie Lovejoy Hunt, 84, of Scott Depot, WV passed away, Monday, July 5, 2010 at her residence.

She was born August 15, 1925 at Palermo, WV, a daughter of the late Hobert and Elwa Hill Lovejoy. She was a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, Hamlin, WV, active member of the American Federation for the Blind, a retired teacher and choir director for the Blind in Muskogee, OK and a retired teacher and choir director at Hamlin High School. She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Harold "Bill" Lovejoy, Ralph Edward "Tom" Lovejoy and Jack Lovejoy.

She is survived by one brother, Sharrell (Lillian) Lovejoy of Hamlin; two sisters, Iva Dean (George) Cook of Scott Depot and Mary Lou (Gerald) Jones of Bridgeport; nieces, Brenda Sue Burford, Pamela Ann Marks-Shulman, Kim Clayton, Beth Midkiff, Suzanne Lopez, Lee Ann Bills, Tessa Cooper; Nephews, David Lovejoy, Doug Lovejoy, Ralph Lovejoy, Jack G. Lovejoy, Jeff Jones, Perry Jones; many great and great great nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Handley Funeral Home, Hamlin, WV. Burial followed in the Lovejoy Cemetery, Palermo, WV.

JOSEPH H. LLOYD

Joseph H. Lloyd, 94, of Tornado went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, June 30, 2010, in Thomas Memorial Hospital.

Joe was a 53-year resident of Tornado and was retired from Union Carbide's Institute Plant. He was an Army veteran of WW II, a Pearl Harbor survivor, and the recipient of a Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. Joe was a good Christian man who attended Hurricane First Church of God.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Bertha Jarvis Lloyd; daughter, Deborah Ann; son, Travis Dale Lloyd Sr.; sisters, Allie Griffin, Gay McCown and Nancy Cottrell; and brothers, A. B., Everett, Dillon, Harry, Noel and Noble Lloyd.

Joe is survived by his loving wife, Mabel Kirkhart Lloyd; daughters, Ramona Harrison and husband, Tom of Hot Springs Village, Arkansas, and Phyllis Richards and husband, Harold, of Rock Branch; and sisters, Mallie Gandee of Akron, Ohio, and Halcie Dawson of New Brunswick, Ohio. Joe was also blessed with eight grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.

A service to celebrate Joe's life was held Monday, July 5, at Casdorph & Curry Funeral Home, St. Albans, with Pastor Harold Richards officiating.

Entombment followed in Graceland Memorial Park Mausoleum, Ruth.

WARNER MARTIN

Warner Martin, 84, of Hurricane passed away at home after a short illness July 1, 2010.

He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Gladys Clark Martin and Zell Martin; son, Steve Martin; and brothers, Aaron Martin and Leotise Martin.

Warner loved his family and is survived by his wife of 60 years, Tressa; sons and their wives, Greg Martin and Connie and Kevin and Vicky Martin; and daughter Sonya Lowe and husband, Kim; grandchildren, Natalie Martin-Smith, Chris Martin, Steve Martin, Nick Martin, Connor Lowe and Alex Lowe; great-grandchild, Noah Martin; eight stepgrandchildren; and brothers, Bob Martin and Vaughn Martin.

Warner was a WWII vet, retired from Union Carbide with 35 years' service, was a 50-year member of Putnam Mason Lodge 139 AF&AM , and a member of First Baptist Church of Hurricane.

Services were held Tuesday, July 6, at Allen Funeral Home, Hurricane, with the Rev. Dr. James Lutz and the Rev. Jim McGehee officiating. Burial followed in Martin Cemetery.

ASHLEIGH MICHELLE RUNION

Ashleigh Michelle Runion, 26, and her 10-month-old son, Westin Harold Frazier, of Bancroft went home together to be with the Lord on Sunday, July 4, 2010, of injuries received in an automobile accident on Route 35 in Fraziers Bottom.

Ashleigh was preceded in death by her maternal great-grandparents, Robert and Wilma Arthur of Poca; and paternal great-grandparents, Harold and Kathryn Grueser of Poca.

Ashleigh is survived by her mother, Terrie Runion of Bancroft; and her father, Daniel Runion of Red House.

Also surviving are a sister, Danielle Burford and her husband, Seth, and a niece, Kathryn, of Rock Branch; companion, Eddie Frazier, father of Westin, of Pliny; grandparents, Harold "Skip" and Rebecca Grueser of Poca and Lenora, Vance Runion of South Charleston and Janet and Dale Frazier of Fraziers Bottom; Westin's sister, Shelby Jane of Scott Depot; a great-grandpa, Harold Hickman of Pliny; and a "special" uncle, Rob.

Ashleigh graduated from Poca High School in 2002.

She attended WVSU, Institute, and graduated in 2007 with a Bachelor of Science degree in education with a specialty in MMI and autism.

She was a third grade teacher at Hometown Elementary School, Hometown.

She loved to teach and her students loved her so much.

Ashleigh was a member of Riverside Baptist Church, Red House, where she served as a youth Sunday school teacher for many years.

Ashleigh was a special person. She was a loving and caring mother to Westin and to any child whom she came in contact with.

She was always there to help when any of her friends needed her.

She was a free spirit, who enjoyed every minute of her short life. She will be loved and missed by a host of family and friends, forever.

Funeral services were held Friday, July 9, at Poca Baptist Church with Pastors Dr. Mike Derry and Mike Hanna, officiating. Burial followed in Haven of Rest Memory Gardens, Red House.

HAROLD SHILLING

Harold Shilling, 63, of St. Albans died June 10, 2010 after a long illness. Memorial services were held Thursday, July 1, at Huntington Street Community Church, St. Albans, with the Rev. Richard Mallory and the Rev. Mark Harris officiating.

THEODORE "TED"

NEWTON WATSON

Theodore "Ted" Newton Watson, 77, of Cross Lanes, formerly of St. Albans, W.Va., and Graham, N.C., died July 2, 2010, in Valley Center, South Charleston, after a long illness.

He was born at Hernshaw, W.Va., Kanawha County, and resided in St. Albans for forty years. Ted retired from Union Carbide in 1995 after 39 years of service.

He was a Navy veteran of the Korean War and a member of First Baptist Church in St. Albans. He was a Master Mason of the Washington Lodge No. 58, A.F.&A.M. Ted received his 50 year membership pin in 2010. He was also a member of the Eastern Star, St. Albans.

Ted is survived by his wife, Betty June Watson; daughters, Deborah Prather of Whitsett, N.C., and Sondra Miller and husband Jay of Huntersville, N.C.; his sons, Theodore Watson II and wife Marilyn of Randleman, N.C., and J. Derek Watson and wife Anita of Hurricane. He is also survived by his stepdaughter, Cheryl Lynn Patrick and husband Kim of Cross Lanes; stepson, William Fleisher of Beaverton, Ore.; brother, Ollie Watson, and wife Linda of Elkview; grandchildren, Emily Watson, Bryan and Brittany Miller, Noah Blackhurst and Ryan Patrick.

A celebration of Ted's life was held Monday, July 5, at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens Chapel with the Rev. John Elliott officiating.

A committal service with military and Masonic rites followed the service at Tyler Mountain Memorial Gardens.

HAZEL PAULINE YOST

Hazel Pauline Yost, 78, of Eleanor, formerly of Arbuckle, passed away on Saturday, July 3, 2010, at CAMC Teays Valley Hospital following a long illness.

She was a homemaker for most of her life, but spent time working at the Eleanor Post Office and Country Mart in Leon.

She was a member of the Leon Baptist Church and she loved her family.

She enjoyed quilting, watching NASCAR races, working outdoors and spending time in her garden.

Born November 16, 1931, she was the daughter of the late William Slade and Belva Rogers Slade.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by the love of her life, her husband, Hubert Yost, and an infant brother.

She is survived by her daughters, Peggy (Larry) Adkins of Milton and Ginny (David) Cunningham of Eleanor; brothers, Glen Slade of MacArthur, Ohio, and Furl Slade of Columbus, Ohio; a sister, Dorothy Sargent of Columbus, Ohio; granddaughters, Cassandra (Jerry) Meeker of Ona and Kendra Cunningham and Casey Cunningham, both of Eleanor; and special brothers- & sisters-in-law who, meant so much to her, Bobby and Donna Yost, Juanita Boardman, Carroll and Genny Yost, David and Marlin Yost, and Keith and Margie Carpenter; as well as special nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, July 7, at Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, with Pastor Basil Hudson officiating. Burial followed in Suncrest Cemetery, Point Pleasant.

Raynes Funeral Home, Buffalo, was in charge of arrangements.
